I agree; this is a great story idea and should be covered from many different angles and opinions. Although, I think that in this day and age it may be difficult to find an ‘anti-feminist’ if you will. I don’t think that many people will deny that this is happening, but rather they choose to ignore it.

I know that women are grossly mis-represented in the media; I’ve known that for a very long time now. But when watching this video I had a little epiphany about myself. I’ve always been very concerned about how I look; very vain. I’ve always considered it a personality flaw, but never even considered the potential that it could have been because of my childhood influences. That idea was probably the biggest thing I took away from this video.

So here I am again this week with another story idea. As some of you may have noticed, my story ideas usually pertain to gender/sexual equality, and they probably will until this equality is reached (so that means I’ll be writing about the same topic for another 500 years or so). My story idea last week briefly touched upon this topic, but I feel that this issue needs as much coverage from as many different angles as possible.

I came across this extended trailer for a movie called “Miss Representation” which takes an in-depth look at how women in our society are getting the short end of the stick, for lack of a better term. Society focuses on their beauty and appearance far more than their intelligence and talents. Only a small portion of women are in Congress despite women making up about half of the population. Considering that women are told that they are only as good as they look, I don’t find this surprising. I find it incredibly depressing, actually.

My story idea is simple: Why are women not seen as equals?

Let me just ask that again.

Why are women not seen as equals?

Do you realize how ridiculous this question is? We’re all human beings. We all have heartbeats. We all have working minds, talents, and unique personalities. To think that half of the population is STILL being marginalized and mistreated simply blows my mind. This has nothing to do with being a “crazy feminist”. This is about human rights, plain and simple.

I’d like to talk to professors from various fields of study, and not just gender. How are men and women treated differently in workforces, at home, on the street? Why are men and women conditioned to think in certain ways? Why are certain qualities (such as nurturing, compassion, empathy) strictly seen as “girly” while power and dominance are seen as “masculine”?

If you write me off as being a stupid feminist who is over-thinking things, then so be it. I guess that it’s silly for all races to be seen as equal too, right?
