This is a story found on the Global News website, and although it is very well done, I have to admit that I liked Olivia’s story featured on 519 Online News a little better.
There are many good things about this story. The reporter got an interview with a veteran who gave some really great clips about D-Day. As well, the reporter got two more interviews from people relevant to the story which is impressive for a three minute story.
I liked how the covered both the old and the new aspects of ways that we remember. For example they covered the new interactive website for young people, but also stressed that it is important to learn about the war from the veterans who were actually there at the time. This is something that I found particularly touching because it won’t be too long before the veterans from World War II are no longer with us.
They used original footage, which in my opinion makes the story. I love when news broadcasts incorporate old, original footage into their newscasts.
One thing that I didn’t like so much was the voiceover. I wish that they could have done the same thing that Olivia did for her Remembrance Day story; and used the interview as the voiceover. I understand that that is not something everyone can do, but I think it could have really added to the story if they were able to make it work. The voiceover with the reporter I found boring, and almost mundane.
