Occupy Update: EVICTION

For this week’s story I’ll be doing an update on the Occupy Toronto movement; and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. The city has won the court case against the protesters, and there is an eviction notice officially in effect at 12am tonight.
Hours after the decision was made to evict the protestors, police went through the park handing out trespassing notices. This is actually the second round of notices that were handed out; the first was last Tuesday, but applied only to the city’s property and not the nearby church’s property. Today, notices were handed out to the whole park but focused on the tents around the Church.
If anything particularly interesting is going to happen with this movement then it will probably be tonight. The mayor has not officially said whether or not police will be moving into the park at 12am, but occupiers aren’t taking any chances. Protestors are flocking to the park in support of the movement. As of right now, according to the live stream, there are at least hundreds of people in the park. Occupy Toronto is calling for videographers and cameras in the park to document whatever might happen tonight.
The demonstrators are divided into three different groups; green, orange, and red. Protestors wearing green cannot be arrested for personal or family reasons. Protestors wearing orange will stay for as long as possible, and protestors in red will stay at all costs. It definitely sounds like protestors are expecting a conflict tonight between them and the police, and they are doing much to prepare for it.
This story also coincides nicely to 519’s coverage last Wednesday, when we reported directly from the scene at Occupy Toronto.
